iGaming Glossary

Quick, plain definitions of the terms used throughout this guide. That way no bonus page or game guide leans on a word you haven't met yet.

RTP (Return to Player)

Over a huge number of spins or hands, this is the share of all the money bet on a game that it pays back to players in theory. A 96% RTP doesn't mean one session gives back 96%.

Volatility (also called variance)

This describes the pattern of a slot's payouts. Low volatility gives smaller wins that come often. High volatility means longer droughts between bigger wins.

Wagering requirement

How many times you must bet the bonus money (and often the winnings that come from it) before you may withdraw. It is normally written as a multiplier, such as x40.

KYC (Know Your Customer)

Checks that confirm who you are: ID, proof of address and proof you own the payment method. Nearly every online casino asks for them before larger withdrawals.

RNG (Random Number Generator)

Audited software that decides how each spin or hand ends in non-live games. Past results never influence it.

No-deposit bonus

Bonus money or free spins added to your account with no deposit needed. They tend to be smaller than deposit bonuses and come with tougher wagering.

Opt-in

Something you have to do to switch a promotion on. It happens at sign-up or in a promotions tab, and until then the offer doesn't apply to your account.

Provably fair

A check, found mostly in crypto casino games, that lets players confirm for themselves that nobody tampered with a game round afterwards.

Self-exclusion

You lock yourself out of your own account (or of a shared scheme) for a set time or with no end date. Its purpose is preventing problem gambling.

Provider (game provider)

The studio that made a given slot or live game, for instance Pragmatic Play or Play'n GO. It is a separate company from the casino operator.
